At the opening ceremony of Heritage Shores Sports and Games, Laura Joseph told some 300 attendees her story of getting started in tennis. Here is her story in her own words.
I had only been a resident of Heritage Shores for a few months and was still learning to navigate all the offerings. I knew I wanted to get involved in something athletic so when I saw that the tennis club offered lessons, I decided to start there. If it hadn't been for that offer, I probably would not have been inclined to join the club. I've played a lot of sports, except for tennis, and have always wanted to try my hand at it. I felt like I could maybe hold my own if given a few pointers, so I made up my mind to show up for the first meeting of the club. From the moment I walked up to the small group huddled under the portico, I felt like "family". I was immediately greeted, welcomed, and introduced to everyone. No one commented on my cheap Walmart racket, my old jalopy bike I rode up on, or my lack of "proper" tennis attire.
Not only do I get lessons on Wednesdays, but I am able to play with the other, more seasoned members anytime I show up. I'm not made to feel inferior even though my skill level is still evolving. I continually get coaching tips from everyone on how to improve my game which have proven to be invaluable; Everyone is so encouraging and positive not only to me but to everyone in the club.
The courts are nice and the surroundings are well landscaped and welcoming. I also appreciate the fact that the community felt it was worthwhile to give the tennis courts a facelift.
Communication is very good; either through email or TeamReach. The Board does a great job of keeping everyone informed and in the loop.
We've already had one social that was a hit! Covered dish with drinks provided by the club held at the gathering area near the driving range. It was perfect!
While the courts were being rejuvenated, I was very pleased with the efforts by the other club members to find other venues for us to play at. The group could have just shrugged their shoulders and said “we’ll just have to wait for our courts to be finished”, but they didn’t. The carpooling and after play eats/drinks allowed us to get to know each other on a more personal level.
All in all, it's refreshing to be part of a group that goes above and beyond to make the club a perfect place to have fun, learn and develop a skill, and develop friendships.
